The overall objective of the assignment is the supervision of the construction works for the Mwomboshi Dam and appurtenant structures in accordance with the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) Conditions of Contract. The Mwomboshi site is developed on both banks of the Mwomboshi River, in Chisamba District in Central Province to the east of the Great North (T2) Road, and covers a total area of around 5,150 ha gross. The main element of the design is the Mwomboshi dam (23m High). The Dam will collect water from a 954 km2 catchment, with average relief slope 3.5%, extending up to Mukamwanji Hills at the north, Lileta at the west and Namingele Hill at the south. Z&A was responsible for the detail design of the Dam.

The Scope of work under the Contract includes a comprehensive assessment of the existing system, cost effective design of works needed for upgrading the system to a continuous pressured water supply, procurement of works/goods/services as Construction Manager for the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, construction supervision, system operation, maintenance of the system and customer relations (including customer interface, billing and collection) of this continuously pressured water supply system to be performed in 3 stages over the contract period of 12 years.

The project development objective is to "Improve water service quality to a continuous supply (24x7) across the three project cities of Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum and Gulbarga in the state of Karnataka, through the establishment of institutionally and financially sustainable service delivery arrangements at ULB level". The Scope of work under the Contract includes a comprehensive assessment of the existing system, cost effective design of works needed for upgrading the system to a continuous pressured water supply, procurement of works/goods/services as Construction Manager for the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation, construction supervision, system operation, maintenance of the system and customer relations of this continuously pressured water supply system to be performed in 3 stages over the contract period of 12 years. The services included under this project are Feasibility and Tender Design Studies for the Nyimur Multipurpose Water Resources Project located in the Aswa River basin shared between Uganda and South Sudan. The project comprises a community based irrigation scheme, water reservoir, a water and soil conservation component among other enabling sub components. It will establish a water resources information/knowledge base and institutional development of the target project area. The core scheme of the project consists of a 26 m head dam and reservoir on Nyimur River and five (5) modules of irrigated lowland rice of approximately 5,105 ha. A mini hydropower plant with a capacity of 350 kW is included in the dam component. In addition, it includes the establishment, in the sub-catchments, of areas where Sustainable Land use Management is practiced as well as afforestation activities for an estimated at 14,300 ha. It envisages assessment of the likely feasibility and benefits from a technical, economic, financial, environment, social, and institutional perspectives, as well as consideration of alternative financing options.

The main objective of this Irrigation Development Support Project is to “increase yields per hectare and value of diverse products marketed by smallholders benefiting from investments in irrigation in selected sites served by the project”, but also other uses of water supply, water for livestock and hydropower shall be examined. The project develops three irrigation sites of a total area of 6,500ha, namely Lusitu, Musakashi and Mwomboshi, at feasibility and detail design level and also includes the construction of the proposed irrigation schemes. Public and private partnerships (PPP) will be created for the irrigation development and management in all sites. Water supply is ensured via 3 main pumping stations abstracting water from Zambezi and Kafue River, and via the construction of the 23m high Mwomboshi dam of total storage volume of around 63.6MCM. The dam catchment is 954km2.

A photo-Voltaic (PV) solar farm is set up by Sarako PVP Co Ltd. on a site of extent 80A along the lower slopes of St. Pierre Mountain, Mauritius. The objective of this assignment was to re-assess storm water runoff conditions and propose the implementation of watershed measures, as the cut off trench that was was constructed initially, at the cut embankment of a track road at the upstream end of the site, had been filled up with significant volumes of debris causing limitation of the constructed trench hydraulic capacity that resulted in flooding of the PV solar farm and erosion across the site. The project included also a filed investigation to identify the flooding problems, as well as a topographical survey for the development of a hydraulic model for the computation of the surface run-off arriving at the different locations on the farm.

The water losses in Dire Dawa water supply network are estimated at 1,265,720 m³/annum which corresponds to 28% of the volume of water produced. The aim of the Non-Revenue Water Reduction Study will be to reduce the percentage of water losses from 28% to 18% within a five year period. The objectives include the development of an updated map of the Dire Dawa water supply network, the development in GIS software of all necessary databases required, the development of a skeletal network hydraulic model, the specification and procurement of all necessary leak detection equipment for use in effective network monitoring, improved water metering and efficient leak locating and localising, the capacity building of the DDWSSA and the training of DDWSSA staff in all aspects of NRW management and the implementation of a new organisational structure at DDWSSA through which the the proposed strategies and actions will become practicable, achievable and sustainable.
